SEVENEVES by Neal Stephenson

[22816087]

A near-future apocalypse scenario.
The moon explodes in the first paragraph. The pieces of the moon are predicted to smash together and surround the Earth, de-orbiting, creating a rain of molten moon rocks which will last 5-10 thousand years.
All today's technology, which is not prepared for this task, scrambles to get people into space, into caves, and anywhere else where a handful of humans might be able to survive long enough to eventually repopulate the planet.

Real classic sci fi. One of my favorite adventure stories ever, truly epic, and (typical to Neal Stephenson) totally maximalist and packed with details.
